The Archdiocese of Detroit opened Catholic Central as an all-boys high school on Harper Avenue in Detroit in 1928, and it grew into one of the city's leading Catholic schools over the following half century. Detroit mayor Mike Duggan graduated from Catholic Central in the 1970s, while it was still within the city. As Detroit's population shrank, the school moved out to a leased campus in Redford in 1978. Thaddeus McCotter, later a US congressman representing suburban Wayne County, graduated from the Redford campus in 1983. Enrollment kept growing, and in 2005 the school opened a new, larger campus it built at 27225 Wixom Road in Novi, where it still operates today as an independent Catholic college-preparatory school for boys.
