Detroit Black Restaurant Week

From 2017 to 2021, one August week spotlighted Detroit's Black-owned restaurants, food trucks and pop-ups. The last edition we could confirm ran in 2021.
01 / The story of this place
Make time for these
Kwaku Osei-Bonsu and Lauren Bates launched Detroit Black Restaurant Week in 2017 because Black-owned restaurants kept getting left out of the story of Detroit's dining boom. Year one had 12 restaurants; by 2018 diners could eat their way around town in three categories, from food trucks to fine dining, each with set-price deals. The 2021 edition stretched to ten days with more than 50 restaurants, pop-ups and food trucks, plus food truck rallies around the city. We haven't found a standalone Detroit edition since, and its website is gone, but the idea lives on: the national Black Restaurant Week's Midwest campaign included Detroit in September 2025.
- Launched in 2017 with 12 restaurants
- Food trucks, fast casual and fine dining in one week
- 50+ participants and food truck rallies in 2021
- Tied to National Black Business Month in August
