Make time for these
Detroit Artists Market was founded in 1932, in the depths of the Great Depression, by local art patrons led by Mrs. H. Lee Simpson. It began as the Detroit Young Artists Market, a way for artists under 30 to earn a living, and took its current name in 1936 as it opened to artists of every age. Still a nonprofit contemporary gallery, it sells about $100,000 in original art a year and pays $66,000 in commissions to 500 local artists, so buying here goes straight to Detroit makers.
