01 / The story of this place

Make time for these

The village and railroad opened on July 4, 1976, run by Genesee County Parks; many old buildings were moved here and restored. The Huckleberry Railroad borrows its name from an 1857 branch line from Flint to Otter Lake, so slow that riders could hop off, pick huckleberries and climb back on. Engine No. 152 was built by Baldwin in 1920 to help build the Alaska Railroad, came to the county in 1975 and has pulled trains here since 1976. The 40-minute ride runs along Mott Lake and an old Pere Marquette roadbed before looping back into the village. In winter the whole place lights up for Christmas, with a tree lighting and fireworks on opening night.
