01 / The story of this place

Make time for these

The first weekend of May, Southwest Detroit, the heart of the city's Mexican community, throws a huge party. The Mexican Patriotic Committee formed in 1923 so the community could celebrate its big national holidays together, and the volunteer group still runs the Cinco de Mayo Parade and Fiesta today. The holiday honors the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, when Benito Juárez's Mexico beat the French army. On Sunday at noon, rain or shine, floats, folklórico groups, school marching bands and charros roll 2.4 miles down West Vernor Highway from Patton Park to Clark Park, while the fiesta at Patton Recreation Center serves up mariachi, live bands and Mexican food both days. The 2025 parade marked its 60th year, and organizers counted roughly 8,000 spectators despite rain and cold.
