Chrysler built this sprawling campus in Auburn Hills in stages, opening the technology center in 1991 and completing the headquarters tower, designed by SmithGroup, in 1996. At 5.4 million square feet, it's one of the largest office and engineering complexes in the country, bringing thousands of designers, engineers and executives under one roof. Bob Lutz, the swashbuckling product chief who helped revive Chrysler's design lineup in the 1990s, worked out of the newly finished headquarters during his final two years as company president. More than a decade later, Sergio Marchionne ran Chrysler — and after 2014, the merged Fiat Chrysler Automobiles — from this campus as his American base, steering the company from bankruptcy back to profitability. Today it serves as the North American headquarters of Stellantis, Chrysler's corporate successor.
