The Chit Chat, at 8235 12th Street, operated from 1960 to 1967 according to The Concert Database. It was known as a favorite after-hours jam spot of Motown's studio band, the Funk Brothers, who played there with drummer Uriel Jones, and Motown insiders credited late-night jams at the Chit Chat, the 20 Grand and Phelps Lounge with shaping rhythms heard on Motown hits. The lounge appears in aerial photographs of 12th Street on the first day of the July 1967 uprising, which began a few blocks away; a 1968-dated photo of the “Chit Chat Lounge” also circulates, so the 1967 closing year is not certain.
