This two-story, 21,000-square-foot passenger terminal on the Detroit River, between the Renaissance Center and Hart Plaza, opened on July 18, 2011, on a stretch of riverfront that had welcomed cruise ships since 1909 and hosted a busy Great Lakes cruise trade from the 1920s through the 1960s. The Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority built the $22 million dock and terminal, with a 250-foot offshore wharf, largely on federal stimulus funding that U.S. Senator Carl Levin championed, and named the facility for him in recognition of decades of work on the riverfront. Early years saw only a handful of cruise ship visits, but the terminal has since hosted more than 100 cruise ships and excursion vessels, feeding visitors toward attractions like The Henry Ford and the Motown Museum. It remains Detroit's active passenger-ship gateway today.
