This Art Deco showroom on Cass Avenue was built in 1928 for Cass Motor Sales, a car dealership that sold Marmon automobiles and later Dodges and Chryslers for more than forty years. In the mid-1930s a young Dodge salesman named Preston Tucker worked the floor here, more than a decade before he would found his own car company and build the famously ill-fated Tucker 48. Carhartt, the Detroit-born workwear brand founded by Hamilton Carhartt in 1889, took over the long-vacant building and reopened it in August 2015 — fittingly, on Carhartt's birthday — as its flagship retail store. The building is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and sells the same rugged Detroit-made workwear the company has built its name on for more than a century.
