The city of Detroit opened the Brewster-Wheeler Recreation Center in 1929 to serve the Black Bottom neighborhood at a time when Black Detroiters were barred from the YMCA and most other recreational facilities in the city. It quickly became a vital community hub, and in the early 1930s a teenage Joe Louis trained there, winning his first amateur boxing titles before going on to become heavyweight champion of the world; a young Sugar Ray Robinson watched Louis train there as a boy, before his own championship career. The center kept serving the neighborhood for decades after urban renewal cleared much of Black Bottom around it, but it finally closed in 2006 and sat empty for nearly twenty years. In December 2025, the building reopened with a new purpose: it's now home to the relocated Kronk Gym, the boxing gym Emanuel Steward built into a training ground for world champions, bringing Detroit boxing history back to a building that helped start it.
