Make time for these
Philip Breitmeyer built a flower empire in Detroit before turning to politics, and in 1906 he put up this eight-story Beaux-Arts building at the corner of Broadway and Gratiot to house his flourishing floral business, designed by the local architecture firm Raseman & Fischer. Breitmeyer went on to serve as mayor of Detroit from 1909 to 1910, one of several florists-turned-civic-leaders in a city where the flower trade was once a genuinely big business. The building later took on the names of other tenants, including the Tobin family, and today it's also known as the Harmonie Centre, part of the small but well-preserved Broadway Avenue Historic District downtown. It's listed on the National Register of Historic Places in its own right and has held a mix of retail and residential uses in recent decades.
