01 / The story of this place

Make time for these

The branch opened at this spot on December 28, 1912. It's named for Herbert Bowen, one of the early members of the Library Commission. Carnegie money paid for the English collegiate-style building, with walls of buff Ohio stone and red vitrified brick. Inside there's a fireplace covered in Pewabic tile from Detroit's own pottery studio.
