01 / The story of this place
Make time for these
In 1920 Wayne County set aside $10,000 for local libraries, and Belleville's first library station opened in the J. C. Pullen Furniture Store with 200 books. William Van Dyke later gave the city a library building in memory of his friend Fred C. Fischer; it was dedicated on November 8, 1953, which is why the library's email still carries Fischer's name. A federal grant helped triple the 3,500-square-foot building in 1992. In 2010 the three communities left the county system and formed their own district library. On February 29, 2020, a new two-story, 30,000-square-foot library opened right next to the old one.
