01 / The story of this place
Make time for these
U-M President Lee Bollinger pitched the idea to the Board of Regents in 1997. Miller, a Michigan alum, answered with a postcard: he'd turned down similar offers before, but this one felt right coming from Ann Arbor. A $10 million gift from Charles Walgreen Jr., a 1938 graduate of the College of Pharmacy, built the whole Walgreen Drama Center, theater included. It opened on March 29, 2007. Toronto firm KPMB designed it, and the removable seating lets the room work as a proscenium stage or a wide thrust.
