Arctic Edge Arena in Canton, west of Detroit, has two NHL-sized rinks and has long served as one of metro Detroit's main hubs for competitive figure skating and youth hockey. Meryl Davis and Charlie White, who grew up together in the Detroit suburbs and started skating as kids, trained here through the 2000s under coaches Igor Shpilband and Marina Zoueva, building the partnership that would carry them to the top of ice dance. After Shpilband left the coaching partnership in 2012, Davis and White stayed with Zoueva and kept training in the Detroit area on their way to the 2014 Sochi Olympics, where they became the first Americans ever to win gold in ice dance. The rink remains open today, still hosting hockey leagues, figure skating clubs and public skate sessions.
