Anna Records was founded in Detroit in 1959 by sisters Anna Gordy and Gwen Gordy Fuqua together with songwriter Billy Davis, drawing on the music-business experience the Gordy sisters had already built writing hits for Jackie Wilson and Etta James. The label's biggest success came fast: Barrett Strong's Money (That's What I Want) reached number two on the R&B chart in early 1960 and became one of the songs that defined the sound Motown would soon make its own. Lamont Dozier, later a third of the Holland-Dozier-Holland songwriting team, recorded for Anna under the name Lamont Anthony around 1960–1961, and a young Marvin Gaye worked at the label as a session drummer. In 1961, brother Berry Gordy absorbed Anna Records and its roster into Motown, folding its artists, including Gaye, into his growing company.
