The American Hungarian Reformed Church on Allen Road is the last Hungarian Reformed congregation in metro Detroit and the heir of the Calvinist churches that once stood in Delray. Its roots go back to December 14, 1904, when Hungarian immigrants organized the Magyar Reformed Church of Delray; its first small wooden church rose at West End and Vanderbilt streets in 1906. Delray later had several Hungarian Reformed congregations, including the Free Magyar Reformed Church on Thaddeus Street, founded in 1922, and an independent Hungarian Reformed Church organized in 1941 at Dearborn and Vanderbilt streets, which absorbed the Thaddeus congregation in 1959. As Interstate 75 and industry emptied Delray and members moved to the Downriver suburbs, the church sold its Delray buildings in 1965 and built its present complex in Allen Park. It keeps ties on both sides of the ocean as a member of the Hungarian Reformed Church in America, the Calvin Synod of the United Church of Christ and the Reformed Church in Hungary. Its worship is bilingual, with Sunday services in both English and Hungarian.
