Alvin's opened on Cass Avenue in 1968 as a deli, bar and hangout near Wayne State University; the deli had its glory days in the 1970s, and in the 1980s and 1990s it became a popular venue for touring and local rock bands. In the 2000s it was open only intermittently, and investors tried to revive it, hosting dance nights such as Mike Huckaby's house parties around 2010. The 325-capacity room eventually closed around 2010–2011, and Tony V's Tavern, owned by diner operator Anton Vulaj, took over the space.
