01 / The story of this place
Make time for these
Affirmations has served the community since 1989 and today occupies a purpose-built home in downtown Ferndale. It runs support groups, affordable queer-affirming therapy, youth and senior programming, arts events and social clubs. The building also houses the Pittman-Puckett Gallery, a MiGen senior-center office and The Ringwald Theatre, and the center is a Ferndale Pride partner. Its Sports & Movement program covers queer yoga, a run club, tango and self-defense.

The Affirmations team participated in the Funky Ferndale Art Fest, offering unique and mystery-themed artworks while sharing information about their community-building efforts in Ferndale. Proceeds from the sales supported Affirmations’ services.

Heart of the Work is an annual awards event held in Ferndale, presented this year as a drag show celebrating community. Eight outstanding community members and collectives are honored for contributing to a safer, more affirming Michigan LGBTQ+ environment.

Every last Wednesday of the month, LGBTQ+ allies and friends gather for conversation, food, and entertainment in Ferndale, organized by Affirmations.

The Stonewall Run Club organizes regular runs in Ferndale, starting outside Affirmations. Two route options are available: 5k and 10k, finishing alternately at Soho or Sidecar Slider Bar depending on the week. The run is cancelled in case of inclement weather and replaced by an indoor meetup at the Soho/Sidecar Slider Bar.
