The Detroit story
Walter Williams, known as Zelooperz, is a member of the Detroit hip-hop collective Bruiser Brigade, led by Danny Brown, and records for its label, Bruiser Brigade Records. Emerging in the 2010s as one of the most idiosyncratic voices of the city's underground, he developed a restless, genre-bending style that moves between rap, punk energy and psychedelic production. He is extraordinarily prolific: in 2019 he released two albums, Wild Card and Dyn-o-Mite, and in 2020 three more, Gremlin, Moszel Offline and Valley of Life, followed by Van Gogh's Left Ear (2021) and Dali Aint Dead (2025), with guests Zack Fox and Paris Texas. Williams is also a painter, citing Francis Bacon and Hajime Sorayama as influences; he paints many of his own album covers, including the self-portrait on Van Gogh's Left Ear, and sells work under his stage name and as Moszel Offline. His art-and-music practice ties him to Detroit's long tradition of multidisciplinary artists.
