The Detroit story
Alvin Joiner was born in Detroit and spent his early childhood there before his family moved away; he later built his career in Los Angeles. His debut album At the Speed of Life came out in 1996 on Loud Records, followed by 40 Dayz & 40 Nightz. Dr. Dre then took an interest and served as executive producer of Restless (2000) and Man vs. Machine (2002), which reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200. In the 2000s he became known worldwide as host of MTV's car-customizing show Pimp My Ride, and he has acted in films such as Gridiron Gang and in the series Empire. In 2010 he made a guest appearance on ABC's Detroit 1-8-7, a police drama set in his birthplace.
