The Detroit story
Ulana Jurkiw was born in Detroit in 1963 to parents of Ukrainian descent and grew up in the metro area's Ukrainian community, attending Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic School in Warren. She studied at Wayne State University, took her medical degree at Michigan State University in 1989 and did her intermediate residency with the Oakwood health system in the Detroit area. After radiology residency in New York, she returned for postgraduate research in mammography at Henry Ford Hospital in 1994–1995, and was later named acting director of women's imaging there before leaving in 1999 for private practice in New York. After the 2013–2014 Maidan protests she moved to Ukraine, trained soldiers in combat medicine and in 2016 became acting minister of health, pushing a sweeping and controversial reform of the country's health system. She has also held Ukrainian citizenship since 2015.
