The Detroit story
Krug was born in Royal Oak and grew up playing for two of the Detroit area's best-known youth hockey programs, Little Caesars/Honeybaked and the Belle Tire midget club, developing the skating and offensive instincts that later made him one of college hockey's most sought-after free agents at Michigan State University. He never played for the Red Wings, but he grew up idolizing Detroit forward Pavel Datsyuk and scored his first NHL goal against Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard, a fellow product of Michigan hockey. His career, spent mainly with the Boston Bruins and later the St. Louis Blues, still carries the imprint of the youth rinks where it began.
