The Detroit story
Miličević's family settled for good in Troy, Michigan, when he entered third grade, and both of his parents worked in manufacturing in Troy and Detroit. He studied violin as a boy, inspired by his uncle Željko "Bill" Miličević, a violinist who taught music at Oakland University in Rochester. As a teenager he joined metro Detroit's heavy-metal scene and co-founded the band Morphic, which played small Michigan clubs. He also trained as an executive and pastry chef at Oakland Community College and cooked in metro Detroit restaurants. In 2003 he joined Thirty Seconds to Mars, playing lead guitar through A Beautiful Lie, This Is War and Love, Lust, Faith and Dreams until 2018. He has credited the ethnic and cultural mix of the Detroit area with shaping him as a musician, and in 2014 he left Los Angeles and moved to Detroit's Indian Village.
