The Detroit story
Tom Hulce was born in Detroit and grew up in nearby Plymouth, the youngest of four children. His father worked for the Ford Motor Company, and his mother had sung for a time with Phil Spitalny's all-girl orchestra. Tom planned to be a singer too, but when his voice broke he switched to acting. He left home in his teens for a year at the Interlochen Arts Academy in northern Michigan, then studied at Beloit College and the North Carolina School of the Arts before making his Broadway debut in Equus in 1974. Film fame followed as the naive pledge Pinto in Animal House (1978) and, above all, as the giggling, brilliant Mozart in Amadeus (1984). He later moved behind the scenes, winning a Tony Award in 2007 as a lead producer of the musical Spring Awakening.
