The Detroit story
The Florida Panthers traded Todd Bertuzzi to Detroit at the 2008 trade deadline, and he helped the Red Wings reach the Western Conference finals that spring before departing as a free agent. Detroit brought him back in August 2009 on a one-year deal, and Bertuzzi stayed for five seasons, twice signing contract extensions and adapting his physical style into a more defensively responsible role under coach Mike Babcock. He scored a shootout winner during that stretch and helped Detroit reach the second round of the 2011 playoffs. Long known for his part in a notorious on-ice attack on Steve Moore while with Vancouver, Bertuzzi found a calmer, well-regarded second act in Detroit before retiring in the mid-2010s.
