The Detroit story
Porter was born in Ypsilanti, on the western edge of metro Detroit, and returned to the area for college, running for the University of Michigan Wolverines from 2006 to 2009. She was a five-time NCAA national champion and All-American at Michigan, and while there she also earned a PhD in pharmacology, graduating in 2012. After college she began representing Great Britain internationally rather than the United States, going on to win bronze at the 2013 World Championships and gold at the 2014 European Championships, becoming the first British woman to win a European title in the 100-meter hurdles. Her younger sister, Cindy Sember, followed the same path from American junior competition to the British team.
