The Detroit story
Thaddeus McCotter was born in Detroit in 1965 and grew up in the western suburbs, where his mother served as city clerk of Livonia. He graduated from Detroit Catholic Central High School in Redford in 1983 and earned his bachelor's and law degrees at the University of Detroit. After serving on the Wayne County Commission, he won a seat in the Michigan Senate in 1998 and in 2002 was elected to Congress from the 11th district, covering Livonia, Westland, Novi and other northwestern suburbs of Detroit. A guitar-playing conservative with a taste for rock references, he launched a long-shot 2012 presidential bid in 2011. His career ended abruptly in 2012, when his re-election petitions were found to contain copied signatures; he resigned from Congress that summer, and aides were later charged. From 2014 he hosted a talk show on a Detroit radio station.
