The Detroit story
Dischinger, a three-time All-Star and member of the gold medal-winning 1960 U.S. Olympic basketball team, came to Detroit in a June 1964 trade with the Baltimore Bullets and made his third straight All-Star team while averaging 18.2 points a game for the Pistons. Military service and a stint away from the league interrupted his career, but he returned to Detroit in 1967 and played five more seasons, closing out his NBA career in 1972. Over six seasons in Detroit he averaged 12.2 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 452 games, playing alongside future Hall of Famers Dave Bing, Bob Lanier and Walt Bellamy. After basketball, Dischinger, who had trained as a dentist, practiced orthodontics.
