The Detroit story
Terrence Parker is a Detroit house DJ and producer who has released more than 100 records since 1988. With vocalist Nicole Gregory he helped set the tone of Detroit's piano-led house sound, and his records “Love's Got Me High” and “The Question” became hits in Britain, the Netherlands, Germany and France. His faith runs through his work: albums such as Emancipation of My Soul (1996) and No Weapons Formed Against Me Shall Prosper (1997, as Seven Grand Housing Authority) fuse gospel with club music, and his 2014 album is titled GOD Loves Detroit. Parker is also famous for DJing with an old-fashioned telephone handset instead of headphones, a trademark of his turntable technique. In the late 1990s he worked at Melodies & Memories, a record store on Gratiot in Eastpointe, where a teenage Seth Troxler worked beside him as the techno buyer. His album Detroit After Dark (1997) sums up his hometown's after-hours soul.
