The Detroit story
In 1995, when she was thirteen, Lipinski and her mother moved to Bloomfield Hills so that she could train with coach Richard Callaghan at the Detroit Skating Club, one of the country's leading figure-skating centers. The move paid off quickly. In 1997, at fourteen, she became the youngest U.S. champion up to that time and the youngest world champion ever in singles, and she became the first woman to land a triple loop–triple loop combination in competition. At the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano she won the gold medal ahead of Michelle Kwan, still the youngest individual Olympic champion in the sport. She then turned professional and toured with Stars on Ice. Lipinski, whose skating years in Michigan are part of the Detroit Skating Club's proud history, later became a prominent television figure-skating commentator. She was the youngest inductee into the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 2013.
