The Detroit story
Cash arrived in Detroit as the second overall pick in the 2002 WNBA draft after winning two NCAA titles at UConn. She helped spark the Shock's turnaround in the second half of her rookie season, then led the team to its first WNBA championship in 2003. She was central again when the Shock, coached by former Piston Bill Laimbeer, won a second title in 2006, an injury suffered in that championship run troubling her for years afterward. Cash left Detroit after the 2007 season amid friction with Laimbeer, later winning a third championship with Seattle in 2010. She is one of eleven women to hold an Olympic gold medal, an NCAA title, a FIBA World Cup and a WNBA championship, and was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2022.
