The Detroit story
Smith was born in Highland Park, a small city surrounded by Detroit, and went on to star at Michigan State University, where he finished his career as the school's all-time leading scorer with 2,263 points and was later inducted into its athletics hall of fame. His fourteen-season NBA career, mostly spent with the Miami Heat, Atlanta Hawks and San Antonio Spurs, twice brought him up against the Detroit Pistons in the playoffs, and he won an NBA championship with San Antonio in 2003 and three Olympic gold medals with the U.S. national team. He never played for a Detroit franchise, but his Michigan roots and generous $2.5 million gift to his alma mater kept his home-state ties strong. He now works as a basketball analyst for Turner Sports.
