The Detroit story
Detroit selected Mix in the fifth round of the 1969 NBA draft, and he spent his first two-plus professional seasons with the Pistons under coaches Butch van Breda Kolff and, briefly, Earl Lloyd. His role was modest, appearing in 61 games and averaging 7.3 points and 4.1 rebounds, and the Pistons waived him in November 1971. Mix caught on with the ABA's Denver Rockets before finding his real footing with the Philadelphia 76ers, where he spent nine seasons, made an All-Star team and reached four NBA Finals, later becoming a longtime 76ers broadcaster. His NBA career began, modestly, in Detroit.
