01 / The Detroit story
The Detroit story
McCrory grew up in Detroit and graduated from Pershing High School in 1982, already training at the Kronk Gym alongside future world champions including Thomas Hearns and his own older brother, welterweight champion Milton McCrory. He won a bronze medal at the 1983 Pan American Games and a World Championship Challenge title before capping his amateur career with Olympic gold in the flyweight division at the 1984 Los Angeles Games, one of Detroit's rare Olympic boxing champions. He turned professional afterward but never matched his amateur success, and he died in Detroit in 2000 at age thirty-six.
