The Detroit story
Henderson grew up in Detroit, graduated from the University of Detroit Jesuit High School in 1988 and from the University of Michigan in 1992, and worked at papers around the country before coming home as editorial page editor and columnist of the Detroit Free Press in 2009. His columns during Detroit's slide into the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history, arguing for the city's pensioners, neighborhoods and art collection, won the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Commentary and the National Association of Black Journalists' Journalist of the Year award. Since 2015 he has hosted the daily talk show Detroit Today on WDET and also hosts American Black Journal on Detroit Public Television. The Free Press dismissed him in 2017 after sexual-harassment allegations; the paper's owner later reached a settlement with him.
