The Detroit story
Stacey Pullen was raised in Detroit and fell for electronic music early, growing up on the sound of the Belleville Three. He entered the scene in 1990 as a student and business associate of Derrick May, part of the circle around May's Transmat label. Recording as Silent Phase, Kosmik Messenger, Bango and X-Stacy, he looked for a middle path between Carl Craig's futurism and Jeff Mills's stark minimalism, weaving house and garage grooves into techno. His album Today Is the Tomorrow You Were Promised Yesterday, released on Virgin's Science imprint, went further toward jazz and funk and drew comparisons with Herbie Hancock. His DJ career took him around the world, and he became a regular at Detroit's Memorial Day electronic music festival. Critics cite his fusion of house and techno as an influence on later electronic artists.
