The Detroit story
Simone Missick, born Simone Cook in Detroit in 1982, grew up in the city and graduated from Renaissance High School, one of Detroit's selective public high schools on the northwest side. She went on to Howard University in Washington, D.C., finishing a degree in English and theater arts in 2003. After years of small roles she broke through as Detective Mercedes "Misty" Knight in Marvel's Luke Cage (2016–2018), a role she carried into The Defenders and Iron Fist and that made her one of the most visible Black women in superhero television. From 2019 to 2023 she led the courtroom drama All Rise as Judge Lola Carmichael, a former prosecutor newly appointed to the bench, and she has since appeared in film and on other series. Detroit gave her schooling and the start of her performing life.
