01 / The Detroit story
The Detroit story
Joseph Utsler was born in Wayne, in western Wayne County, and grew up partly in Oak Park, where he and his older brother John befriended Joseph Bruce. The three formed the Inner City Posse and, after the 1991 EP Bass-Ment Cuts, hired Alex Abbiss to manage them and set up Psychopathic Records. Reborn as Insane Clown Posse, Utsler and Bruce built their Dark Carnival mythology and their Juggalo following show by show in Detroit clubs before reaching the national charts in the late 1990s. Utsler drew on old-school hip-hop and on Detroit acts such as Esham and Awesome Dre. Faygo showers, the Halloween-night Hallowicked concerts and the Gathering of the Juggalos, first held in Novi in 2000, all grew out of the duo's metro Detroit base. He is also a co-founder and color commentator of Juggalo Championship Wrestling, and Psychopathic remains headquartered in Farmington Hills.
