The Detroit story
Robert Remus was born in Detroit in 1948, though he grew up on a farm in Minnesota. Wrestling from the late 1970s as "Sgt. Slaughter," a fictional Marine drill instructor in fatigues and sunglasses, he became one of the top stars of the National Wrestling Alliance and later the WWF, winning the WWF Heavyweight Championship and headlining WrestleMania VII in 1991. His character was also adapted into the G.I. Joe toy line, comics and cartoon. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2004.
