The Detroit story
Seth Troxler was born in Kalamazoo and moved with his family to the outskirts of Detroit at fourteen, settling near Lake Orion and throwing himself into the city's musical heritage. While still a teenager he landed a job as techno buyer at Melodies & Memories, a record store on Gratiot in Eastpointe just north of 9 Mile, working beside Detroit house producer Terrence Parker and Reggie Harrell. Richie Hawtin and Moodymann became formative influences, and he began DJing in the Detroit area, later appearing at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival. His career took off in Europe in the late 2000s through labels such as Wolf + Lamb and Crosstown Rebels; he co-founded Visionquest and runs the labels Tuskegee, Soft Touch and Play It, Say It. Known for long, eclectic sets at Fabric, Panorama Bar, Circo Loco and festivals from Coachella to Glastonbury, he also ran the barbecue restaurant Smokey Tails in East London, a nod to American comfort food.
