The Detroit story
Doumbouya grew up in Paris and turned professional in France as a teenager before Detroit selected him 15th overall in the 2019 NBA draft, betting on his youth and physical upside. He spent time with the Pistons' G League affiliate, the Grand Rapids Drive, before making his NBA debut that November at Little Caesars Arena as, briefly, the league's youngest active player. He played two seasons in Detroit during a rebuilding stretch for the franchise before moving on, later returning to European basketball, where he became a regular for both the French and, more recently, the Guinean national team.
