The Detroit story
Lang was leading the NHL in scoring with Washington in February 2004 when Detroit traded for him, giving up a prospect and two draft picks to add a proven scorer for a championship push. He helped the Red Wings reach the 2004 playoffs, though they fell to Calgary, and stayed in Detroit through the 2006–07 season before an unrestricted free-agent move to Chicago. He was also a mentor off the ice: his Czech countryman and Red Wings teammate Jiří Hudler lived with him during his time in Detroit. Lang later returned to Joe Louis Arena as an opponent with Phoenix in the 2010 playoffs, where his Coyotes lost to the Red Wings in seven games.
