The Detroit story
Rob Cantor was born and raised in Bloomfield Hills. In 2002, while a student at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, he formed Tally Hall with bassist Zubin Sedghi, drummer Steve Gallagher and keyboardist Andrew Horowitz, soon joined by guitarist Joe Hawley. Performing in matching suits with colored ties, the Michigan-based band mixed Beatles-style pop, vaudeville and indie rock; its albums Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum (2005) and Good & Evil (2011) built a devoted online following that grew long after the band went on hiatus. Cantor also became known for comic music videos: his song “Shia LaBeouf,” which casts the actor as a cannibal killer, became a viral hit in 2014, and “29 Celebrity Impressions, 1 Original Song” followed. He released the solo album Not a Trampoline in 2014.
