The Detroit story
Rick Carlisle, a role player on two NBA championship teams as a player, got his first head-coaching job with the Pistons for the 2001–02 season. He led Detroit to the playoffs in both of his seasons, and in 2002–03 his team eliminated Larry Brown's Philadelphia 76ers in the Eastern Conference semifinals before being swept by the New Jersey Nets in the conference finals. Despite that success and a year left on his contract, the Pistons fired Carlisle after the 2002–03 season and hired Brown to replace him. Carlisle went on to win the 2011 NBA Finals as head coach of the Dallas Mavericks and is one of only fourteen people to win an NBA title as both a player and a coach.
