The Detroit story
Gerin was born in Detroit and grew up in the nearby suburb of Dearborn Heights, where he graduated from Annapolis High School after wrestling and playing football there. He broke into professional wrestling on the Canadian independent circuit before signing with Extreme Championship Wrestling in 1999 under the ring name Rhino, later spelled Rhyno, and became the promotion's final World Heavyweight and World Television Champion before it closed in 2001. He moved to WWE and later TNA, winning the NWA World Heavyweight Championship in 2005, and returned to WWE in 2015, where he and Heath Slater became the first SmackDown Tag Team Champions. Gerin has stayed rooted in the Detroit area, twice running for local and state office from his hometown of Dearborn and buying a marina in nearby Monroe, Michigan.
