The Detroit story
Bush signed a four-year deal with the Lions in March 2013, more than a decade removed from his Heisman-winning days at USC and several years past his Super Bowl title with New Orleans, joining Detroit as a veteran complement to a run game built around Joique Bell. He made an immediate impact, gaining 191 yards from scrimmage with a receiving touchdown in his Lions debut, and coaches used him as a versatile "three-down back" who could run, catch and return kicks. In 2014 he helped the Lions reach the playoffs, where they lost a close Wild Card game to the Dallas Cowboys. The Lions released him in February 2015 after two seasons, and he closed out his NFL career with San Francisco before moving into broadcasting. Bush's collegiate legacy was itself controversial: he forfeited his Heisman Trophy in 2010 over an improper-benefits scandal at USC, though it was restored to him fourteen years later.
