The Detroit story
McCallum was born in Detroit and starred at Detroit Country Day School, leading the team to the 2010 Michigan state championship and earning all-state honors from both Detroit newspapers. He chose to stay home for college, playing for his father, head coach Ray McCallum, at the University of Detroit Mercy, where as a freshman he became the first Titan to make an all-Horizon League team and later was named the league's Player of the Year as a junior. He left after his junior season for the 2013 NBA draft, was selected by Sacramento, and had a brief NBA career, including a short training-camp stint with the Pistons in 2016 before being waived and continuing his career in the G League and, later, internationally in Taiwan.
