The Detroit story
Alaina Beaton grew up in various parts of metro Detroit. After her mother remarried, the family moved from Royal Oak to Rochester, and she attended Bishop Foley Catholic High School in Madison Heights, though she did not graduate there. At 16 she signed with Virgin Records under the name Porcelain and the Tramps, but disagreements over her music kept the project unreleased; her songs found an audience instead through her Myspace page, which drew millions of plays. In 2009 she signed with producer RedOne's 2101 Records imprint, and her single "This Is What Rock n' Roll Looks Like," featuring Lil Wayne, reached the Billboard dance chart and led to an opening slot on his tour. "One Woman Army" later became a top-forty hit in France and Spain. She also appeared in fellow Detroiter Jack White's video "Freedom at 21" and has co-written songs for One Direction and Orianthi.
