The Detroit story
Dior Giovanni Petty grew up on Detroit's west side and, as a student at Oak Park High School just across 8 Mile, ran with a crew called the Cashoutboyz. In 2006 they joined forces with the Doughboyz from Southfield High to form Doughboyz Cashout, a group that was famous for its jewelry, cars and style before it ever made a record. Inspired by the late Blade Icewood, they released We Run the City Vol. 1 in 2007; songs like “Flood 'Em with Ice” spread through teen parties and burned CDs, and the 2010 summer anthem “Good Ass Day”, made with producer Helluva's “basement music” sound, made them the city's hottest street-rap act. In 2013 Jeezy signed the group to his CTE label. As a soloist Payroll found a second audience with the laid-back, West Coast-flavored Big Bossin' mixtapes (2016, 2018) made with producer Cardo. Metro Times has called him a Detroit rap legend.
